SPIRIT LAKE

In 1980, scientists predicted the imminent eruption of Mount Saint Helens in Washington State. One lodge owner, Harry R. Truman, refused to vacate the Spirit Lake location he’d owned for years. The “rosy-cheeked curmudgeon” became a staple of interviews because of his refusal to heed the warnings of authorities and the rumblings of the mountain. The most common question from reporters before the May 18th, 1980 eruption: Would he get out in time? Or would he stay?
